Useful device, some safety concerns March 22, 2008

This is a basic regulated power supply. There is a transformer, two diodes, two capacitors, a regulator, and a potentiometer to set voltage. In addition, there is a diode and an LED. Useful for a cheap home bench setup, or even as a backup secondary bench power supply for work. It's also quite compact.
Pros: It is nice to have a regulated, adjustable bench power supply for a fraction of the normal cost.
Cons: To deliver a power supply kit at this cost, plenty of corners were cut. The power supply case is not grounded (two-pin connector). There is no fuse. There is no circuit board, but the components are air-soldered (which makes shorts, either due to soldering errors or due to drops and vibration, not unlikely). The entire system relies on the current limiting of the regulator to prevent faults. This raises some safety concerns.
As a minor annoyance, there is no power switch. You have to plug it in and unplug it to power on and off (or get a surge strip). The power cable coming out the front is also not great, and the strain relief isn't especially high quality.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the purchase. Just be aware that to offer this product at this price, corners were cut.
